I prefer to not ask for deposits. I think doing so makes the experience better on both sides. However, there is certainly a reason many providers require a deposit, reasons which are becoming increasingly more frequent for me.

If my friends (you!) would prefer to enjoy a deposit-free booking experience, please do not book on the same day only to cancel or not show up. Not only will I have spent time getting ready for you, physically, mentally, emotionally, but I likely had to turn down other friends to reserve your spot. Hence, your cancellation, costs me: 2 bookings, my time and effort.
